Last week I got a cot size Jelly Roll quilt top completed.
This pattern is called Rail Fence |
This is to teach at one of my Autumn Classes.
I used half of a Kate Spain Central Park Jelly Roll i.e. 20 pre-cut 2.5" strips, separating the strips according to colourways.
Yesterday I got it finished, quilting it with diagonal lines and Free Motion Quilted flowers in the diamond gaps, and bound in aqua stripes.
Might do a bit more quilting in the border. |
The back - this is actually aqua, but evening light doesn't show it up. |
FMQ flower |
The finished quilt measures 42" x 48" (each block is 6.5" finished) however you could easily make this quilt bigger by adding more borders.
Using more strips from the Jelly Roll, you could sew some together lengthways to make a scrappy border, followed by another plain border, finishing with your binding. You could even make your binding from more leftover jelly roll strips.
Jelly Rolls are great to use because they take a lot of the work out of cutting your material, the 40 strips are all co-ordinated because they come from the same fabric series, and they go a long way - you can get lots of projects from one JR. I still have enough left over to make another cot quilt (which will be in different colours from this one), and with the trimmed strip ends, I made this trivet:
Oh, I love those colours together. Great quilt. And such fantastic FMQ flowers.
ReplyDeleteLooks absolutely beautiful. I am always amazed what can be done with a pre-cut. Every time I am tempted to buy a jelly role I lack any imagination in terms of what to do with it and then don't buy it.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful, I love those colours. Your free machining is excellent, the stitches are very even!
ReplyDeleteIts proper lovely, and stop it, you're making me want to ditch everything I'm supposed to be doing and pick up my jelly roll... lol Superlovely quilting btw :-)
ReplyDeleteOoooh, I love it!! Sign me up for the class-- I'll commute across the Atlantic for it!! I esp. love the first photo of your quilt in the outdoors with the scenery in the background. I really like the Central Park fabrics. I do have a Moda JR that I bought on sale (30% off) that is on my [very long] list of things to do. Looking forward to seeing the cot quilt that you have planned.
ReplyDeleteOh, I am LOVING your free motion flowers!!! Gotta try me that. And stripey binding, my fave. *swoon* Very, very pretty work, that'll be a fun class!!
ReplyDeleteIt's all so lovely!! I have only ever bought a plain white Jelly Roll, and that was for pure laziness, but I keep seeing beauties like this and think I should get more.
ReplyDelete(I didn't realize how much I love Central Park until I sorted my LC for the Across the Sea QAL. I want more!!)
I love the quilt and the FMQ'ing. I have used a jelly roll before and they are amazing: so easy!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the quilting on this one! It really complements the design. Its gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a wonderful little quilt! And your quilted flowers are great!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a really cheery quilt Judith - I have yet to succumb to a Jelly Roll but some of my ladies are opting for them this year.
ReplyDeleteIt's so bright but warm and beautiful Judith - will be a great class project!
ReplyDeleteFab FMQ'ing! I love this quilt Judith, the colour the quilting, just wonderful! And I have plenty of JR's in mys tash, they are so versatile, ( I may or may not have a Central Park JR, and some FQ's too! - just sayin!)
ReplyDeleteLovely lovely quilt Judith, and love the Central Park in it too! Do you think it would work with a honeybun? Narrower strips but I think it might! I won one recently and wondering what to do with it.
ReplyDeleteOoo fab quilt and even fabulous-er quilting, love the diamonds with the flowers in the middle! I've always steered clear of jelly rolls because I like to mix up my fabrics so much, but pre-cut does sound much easier...
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty and I love your quilting. I have never in my life bought either a layer cake or jelly roll because I was worried they'd languish in a drawer while I worked out what I could do with them!
ReplyDeleteI've never met a JR in real life but I'm tempted to seek one out! Central Park is such a lovely line - I've not seen any of that in real life, either...I'm so sheltered ;o) Maybe I'll find one at Harrogate show...
